ABOUT ALEX - 2019 'Up and Coming Artist of the Year'
Alex McGarry is a professional artist best known for her often larger-than-life oil paintings of British and Farmyard Animals.
Alex was just nine years old when she begged her Dad, (internationally recognised wildlife artist Pip McGarry) for some oil paints and brushes so she could be a ‘proper artist’. He provided Alex with all the materials and the first Alex McGarry original oil painting was completed - a painting of a baby deer!
At sixteen Alex joined her local art societies and started exhibiting her work. With no formal art training Alex has allowed her style to evolve organically and has developed her techniques within her own style. For the past five years Alex has been a full time artist and has exhibited her paintings across the country.
Alex’s paintings have won several awrds, the two most notable - firstly the publics choice at Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire. Her painting being chosen by the public from over 200 exhibits. More recently Alex was nominated and won the prestigious Fine Art Trade Guild - ‘Up and Coming Artist 2019’. The award was handed out at an awards ceremony in May 2019. Alex says:
“I was so surprised and pleased to win Up and Coming Artist 2019. The Fine Art Trade Guild is renowned for their high standards in the industry and the competition was tough. I was up against some other amazing artists!”
Several of Alex’s paintings have been published into prints and are distributed across the UK alongside her original paintings by her publisher.
In September 2019 Alex opened up The Alex McGarry Studio & Gallery, in Andover, Hampshire’s town centre. The gallery showcases her latest collection of paintings and now stocks a range of Alex McGarry prints, and giftware. Meanwhile the studio section of the shop is in the window area, so that passers by can see Alex at work and her paintings in progress.
